(MB)
Over 2500 short films are produced in Germany every year. In all genres, short films are the most innovative form, and experimental short films represent an even more intense form of this innovative drive. With such an abundance and diversity of short films, any specific selection can no more than crack open the window, offering just a very limited look at the phenomenon of “recent German experimental film.”
The program presented here is specifically limited to films and videos from alumni of the HBK Film Class. For almost forty years, the Film Class has been constantly producing new films and new filmmakers, exercising a significant influence on the imagery of German experimental film up until this very day. This program covers the entire spectrum, but always with the signature of the Film Class. On the one hand are highly polished and staged films, but with the filmmaker also in the picture, as the “hero/heroine” of the narrative. At the other end of the spectrum, we see the “classical” found-footage film, but with the highly personal (bio-)rhythm of the auteur. All these works have the subjective approach in common. They are all authentic testimonies of personal perceptions and understandings. (MB)

Penetrating an interactive surface, we encounter the world of Gas Avalon, where completely different rules apply. Bullets serve as forms of locomotion; artistic genres depict a landscape of placelessness. Man and art transcend to vapor in a power station. As atoms of a soul that has the gift of reason, we return to reality.

When 16 people died in a school shooting in southern germany in March 2009, I start researching the Internet for more information on that topic. Besides innumerable pictures of heavy armed police officers and candles and flowers in front of the school building, I consistently find video material showing a family home filmed from any possible camera perspective. The mercylessness and helplessness of the reporters filming this innocent building make me collecting and reediting those pictures. A portrait of a nice little piece of 21th century middle european architecture forms the result of this found footage work.

I'm Not the Enemy
I'm Not the Enemy
13:30 min | 2011 | video (HD 16:9) | col | stereo (english)

Home is a place of comfort, of security and peace. Delve into the world of a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder suffering war veteran however, and such notions drastically become perverted and uneasy. The home becomes alien and family members come to encapsulate the demons against whom the veteran has to fight. Appropriating dialogues from Hollywood movies that deal with the legacy of the Vietnam War and firmly implanting them amongst quiet German suburbs, "I'm Not the Enemy" cuts open the ways in which a society engaged in war deals with the guilt of problematic returns. In a society that has such little interest in the faraway Afghan war that is fought in its name, how then is the war veteran ever to find any degree of acceptance?

Rong Xiang is a work on architectural replicas, piracy and its political consequences. It is a comparison of LeCorbusier's chapel Notre Dame Du Haut in Ronchamp, France with its exact replica in Zhengzhou, Henan province East China. The work further compares LeCorbusier's human-scale informed "Modulor" concept with ancient Tao philosophy of Confucius and master builders of the Han dynasty. The Ronchamp replica in Zhengzhou is now a legend - it was short lived, erected in 1994 and demolished in 2006 after a three year lasting dispute with the "Foundation LeCorbusier" in Paris.

A small film with the highest emotional potential written in it, conducted from a list about possible images we would add either to the category „happy“ or „sad“. „Happy“ e.g. are sunsets, cake, toys, beaches, while „sad“ holds images as war, drought, devastation, hostiles. The images each got the same chance of one frame and 8x8 pixels. To reduce the formal rigidity and add some personal relation, I had to mix the pseudo-fifties concrete poetry- recitation with some zero-years elevator-homerecording.

Assembled under the aspect of the dominating light source in each particular excerpt, which in this unsettling four minutes work shows off as the merciless ruler over the sound. Or, in the words of found-footage-virtuoso Volker Schreiner: ‚Rooms illuminated by oscilling light, lightened up in rhythmic intervals by lamps and neon signs or irregular flashes of light. People are waiting, awaiting, pondering, searching, worrying.‘“ (catalogue Viennale 10, 2010)

A night in my neighborhood in Los Angeles during a half-year stay in 2008. As it was home to a nearby street gang, police helicopters would often circle around the area. On one noisy night I cautiously moved towards the centre of activity to record some sounds. After I had started the tape, I heard shots, and shortly after met one of the residents, who had come outside to see what was going on. I taped our conversation trying to figure out everything we heard and saw.
