Die 35 Episoden, realisiert durch 22 Künstler und Filmemacher aus Ost- und Westdeutschland, ergeben zusammengenommen einen wahrhaften Super-8-Monumentalfilm. Alle Arbeiten widmen sich dem Lebens- und Leidensweg Jesu und spiegeln dabei das Lebensgefühl deutscher Subkultur Mitte der Achtzigerjahre wider – getreu dem damaligen Motto: "Super8 ist kein Format, sondern eine Lebensauffassung." Right on time for Easter we will show »Jesus – der Film« – a monumental cinematic work in 35 chapters from 1986 shot on super–8mm film. Starring Michael Brynntrup in the title-role, the single episodes were made independently by 22 underground artists and artists-groups from the BRD and the GDR in the year of 1985. Among them e.g. Die Tödliche Doris, padeluun, B. & W. Hein, Dietrich Kuhlbrodt, Jörg Buttgereit, Merve Verlag, or Anarchistische Gummizelle. Brynntrup, the initiator and producer of the project, took also responsibility for the final touch of the film and the continuity: his conceptual approach was – in reference to cadavre exquis, the play of the Surrealists – to let each director watch only the last frames of the previous episode. Gedreht wurde er in schwarz-weiß auf russischem Super-8-Material von 22 Filmemachern und Super-8-Gruppen aus Ost- und Westdeutschland in 15 Monaten. In freier Interpretation und in 35 Episoden erzählt er das Leben Jesu. - Initiator und Koordinator des Projekts, Michael Brynntrup, spielt die Hauptfigur. - Nach seiner Uraufführung auf dem Forum der Berlinale 1986 reiste der Film in vielen Ländern der Welt. 2014 wurde er mit Mitteln der Filmförderungsanstalt aus dem Fördertopf „Filmisches Erbe“ digitalisiert und restauriert. Jetzt wird er in Athen mit einer neuen Live-Vertonung von griechischen Musikern präsentiert. Wednesday, 28 January 2015, 7.00 p.m. Friday, 30 January 2015, 4.45 p.m. Cinerama Filmtheater, Westblaak 18, Rotterdam (Festival: 21 January - 1 February 2015) The joint high mess of 80s German underground: An exercise in exquisite corps (and in some cases probably also automatic writing) for which artists from both nations shot episodes from the Good Book - not necessarily following the text too closely. There's nothing in German film history quite like Jesus - Der Film, starting with the fact this is probably the sole joint endeavor by underground artists from the FRG and the GDR. Michael Brynntrup, the project's mastermind, invited directors and collectives he considered like-minded to each adapt a chapter of the Good Book. Everyone could do whatever they wanted (within limits Brynntrup monitored); nobody knew (in theory if probably not in practice) how the others were approaching their stories; several chapters were directed by Jesus B. himself. Call it an exercise in muted exquisite corps. The result is closer to the Bible's words and images than the Zealots might have you believe - even if the Maria Magdalena of Doris Kuhn is punished by lingerie-clad ladies, while for Jörg Buttgereit Jesus is a vampire who needs a stake to finally die. Dezember 2014, 20.00 Uhr Filmspotting – Erkundungen im Filmarchiv der Deutschen Kinemathek Arsenal (Kino 1), Potsdamer Str. 2, 10785 Berlin JESUS – DER FILM ist ein Monumentalfilm im Super-8-Format, „das große Episodenwerk der deutschen Avantgarde-Szene“ (Frank Arnold). In 35 Episoden wird das Neue Testament von 22 Filmemachern sowie Nicht-Filmemachern aus West-Deutschland, Ost- und Westberlin nacherzählt. Michael Brynntrup, der als Jesus in der Hauptrolle zu sehen ist und die einzelnen Episoden verbindet, konnte dafür zahlreiche und heute namhafte Akteure der Avantgarde- und Undergroundszene der 1980er-Jahre gewinnen. Anlässlich der digitalen Restaurierung des ursprünglich 127-minütigen Films, die mit Mitteln der Filmförderungsanstalt ermöglicht und von der Deutschen Kinemathek betreut wurde, lädt die Reihe Filmspotting zu diesem vorweihnachtlichen Mysterienspiel ein. Abgerundet wird die Veranstaltung durch eine kleine Ausstellung von Dokumenten und „Reliquien“ im roten Foyer des Kino Arsenal und der Präsentation des umfangreichen Materialbuchs 'Jesus – Der Film – Das Buch'. Michael Brynntrup sowie einige seiner Mitstreiter, darunter Jörg Buttgereit und Wolfgang Müller (Mitglied der Künstlergruppe 'Die Tödliche Doris'), werden anwesend sein.
