Erzählt in 35 Episoden und realisiert durch 22 Künstler/innen und Filmemacher/innen aus Ost- und Westdeutschland (darunter Jörg Buttgereit, Georg Ladanyi, Die Tödliche Doris, das Sputnik-Kino, Birgit und Wilhelm Hein, Dietrich Kuhlbrodt, der Merve Verlag Berlin), widmet er sich dem Lebens- und Leidensweg Jesu und spiegelt dabei das Lebensgefühl deutscher Subkultur Mitte der Achtzigerjahre wider – getreu dem damaligen Motto: »Super8 ist kein Format, sondern eine Lebensauffassung.« Nach seiner Uraufführung beim 16. Internationalen Forum des Jungen Films der Berlinale 1986 reiste »Jesus – der Film« mit nur einer Kopie zu zahlreichen Festivals im In- und Ausland, wurde mehrfach ausgezeichnet und erlangte Kultstatus in der Off-Off-Szene. Er gilt seither als zentrales Werk der Filmavantgarde und der Super8-Bewegung der Achtzigerjahre in Deutschland. Das bilinguale Materialbuch »Jesus – der Film – das Buch« dokumentiert die drei Jahre des Jesusfilm-Projekts – von den ersten Ideen und Recherchen (1984) über Faksimiles der Jesusbriefe an die beteiligten Filmemacher/innen, das detaillierte Projekttagebuch mit Zeugnissen von den Dynamiken der Gruppenarbeit, über Materialien und Bildern von den Drehs und von den wie Reliquien behandelten Requisiten bis hin zu Faksimiles der Programmflyer von den monatelangen »Missionstourneen« durch die BR Deutschland (1986) und Nordamerika (1987). Das Materialbuch stellt sich so als ein ganz eigenständiges Werk dar. Das Buch enthält außerdem zwei film- bzw. kunstwissenschaftliche Beiträge zur Produktions- und Projektgeschichte des Jesusfilms. Michael Brynntrup’s Jesus – the Film (127 min., 1986) is a monumental Super 8 film in 35 chapters. Realized by 22 artists and filmmakers from both East and West Germany, it focusses on the life and suffering of Jesus while also reflecting the spirit of mid-80s German subculture, true to the motto of the time: “Super 8 is not just a format, it’s an outlook on life.” After its premiere at the 16th International Forum of New Cinema during the 1986 Berlinale, Jesus – the Film travelled with just a single exhibition copy to numerous festivals both domestically and internationally, achieving several awards as well as a cult status in the off-off scene. It has stood since then as a pivotal work within the film avant-garde and the Super 8 movement of 1980s Germany. Jesus – the Film – the Book is a bilingual compilation of materials documenting the three years of the Jesus Film project, ranging from the initial ideas and research in 1984, through facsimiles of the Jesus Letters that were sent to participating filmmakers, a detailed project diary with notes on the dynamics of group work, additional production materials along with images of the shoot and of props that attained the status of relics, to facsimiles of program flyers from the months-long “Mission Tours” through West Germany (1986) and North America (1987). The book thus stands as an independent work of its own. The book also includes two scholarly essays on the production and project history of the Jesus Film.
