FOCUS TEST

When nasalizing, one must differentiate – let me demonstrate – between the closed nasalizing of stuffed nose speech, where the nose is not used as a resonator, and the open nasalizing of palatal speech, where all sounds seem nasal.

Too bad!

Imagine people living in a cavernous cell down under the ground; at the far end of the cave, a long way off, there's an entrance open to the outside world. They've been there since childhood, with their legs and necks tied up in a way which keeps them in one place and allows them to look only straight ahead, but not to turn their heads. There's firelight burning a long way further up the cave behind them, and up the slope between the fire and the prisoners there's a road, beside which you should imagine a low wall has been built - like the partition which conjurors place between themselves and their audience and above which they show their tricks.
{quotation: Plato Republic, Book VII 514, translated by Robin Waterfield}

By the way, I was just nosepicking, in my own nose. That is, first with my left index finger in the right nostril, and then with the same in the left nostril – from my point of view. Of course, I didn’t see it from my point of view. To me, whatever, it doesn’t matter. But if I did want to see my finger up my own nose with my own eyes, what then? Then I would have to squint, which would be exhausting, or I would have to go get a mirror, which would be too much trouble, just to see my finger up my nose. Besides, I wouldn’t really see it anyway, because I can’t see inside the nose, not even with squinting or a mirror, especially since a finger’s up my nose. I’d need eyes in my inner nasal cavity, to see from the inside, as the finger comes at me, or rather: at my eyes. However, I’ve got no eyes deep inside my nostrils or rather: in my nasal cavitiy, so I can’t in fact see from the inside.
That's destiny!

But even if I had an eye, or two eyes, or both my eyes inside the nasal cavity, I couldn’t see my finger in my nose, because, as soon as the finger comes through the nasal opening, the so-called “nostril”, it – the finger – completely darkens the nasal cavity, so observing the finger inside the nose would seem no longer possible, so that I can’t ever see a finger inside a nose, this finger in this nose, or my finger in my nose.
Too bad!

Too bad, too bad
