Von Mariä Verkündigung bis Christi Himmelfahrt – das schwarz-weiße Biopic folgt der „greatest story ever told“ streng chronologisch. Doch verfremdet es sie in bester Stummfilmtradition mit exaltierten und expressionistischen Mitteln: Das Jesuskind ist bereits pränatal ein langer Lulatsch; die Heilige Familie innerlich zerstritten; Satan ein Verführer, der mit Drogen, Sex und Rock‘n‘Roll-Ruhm lockt; und Maria Magdalena ist ein resches Luder … Die bei der Berlinale im Internationalen Forum des jungen Films uraufgeführte Travestie war 1986 in der langen Reihe weltweiter Bibelverfilmungen die erste im Super-8-Format. Der 'Monumentalfilm über den Lebens- und Leidensweg unseres Herrn Jesus Christus' (so der Vorspanntitel) versammelt 35 Episoden aus dem Neuen Testament, nach- oder gänzlich neu erzählt von 22 Filmemacher*innen, Individuen oder Kollektiven, aus Ost und West. Verbindendes Element ist die Titelfigur, verkörpert vom Initiator und Koordinator des Jesusfilms, dem 1982 aus dem katholischen Münster nach Westberlin gekommenen Regisseur Michael Brynntrup. Wie die Mehrzahl der Beteiligten war er Teil einer in der damaligen Queer-, Punk- und Avantgarde-Szene aktiven Subkultur. (74. From the annunciation to the ascension, this black-and-white biopic takes a strictly chronological approach to the “greatest story ever told”. Yet in the best silent-film tradition, it distorts reality with effusive and expressionist devices. Even in the womb, the baby Jesus is already a beanpole; the holy family is rife with internal strife; Satan is a debaucher who uses sex, drugs and rock-and-roll as temptations, and Maria Magdalena is a crusty hussy… Premiering in the Berlinale’s Forum section in 1986, this cinematic burlesque was the first in the long line of biblical movies around the world to be filmed in Super 8. The “monumental film about the life and suffering of our Lord Jesus Christ” compiles 35 episodes from the New Testament in retellings or entirely new interpretations by 22 filmmakers, whether individuals or collectives, from East and West. The uniting element is the title character, embodied by the film’s initiator and coordinator, director Michael Brynntrup, who moved from Catholic Münster to West Berlin in 1982. Like most of the people involved in the film, he was a member of the active subculture in then West Berlin’s queer, punk and avant-garde scene. (74. JESUS - DER FILM ist ein Monumental-Spiel-Film in 35 Episoden. Die einzelnen Episoden wurden von insgesamt 22 Filmemachern aus Ost- und Westdeutschland in 12 Monaten (1985) realisiert. Der Film wurde im Februar 1986 beim '16. Internationalen Forum des Jungen Films' in Berlin uraufgeführt. Mit Unterstützung aus dem Fördertopf 'Filmisches Erbe' (FFA) und in Zusammenarbeit mit der Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek wurde der Super8-Film 2014 digitalisiert und restauriert, und ist seither auch als DCP (Digital Cinema Package) verfügbar. JESUS - THE FILM is a monumental feature film in 35 episodes. The individual episodes were made by a total of 22 filmmakers from East and West Germany in 12 months (1985). The film premiered in Berlin in February 1986 at the '16th International Forum of Young Film'. The Super 8 film was digitized and restored in 2014 with the financial support of the "Film Heritage" program of the German Federal Film Board (FFA) and the collaboration of the Deutsche Kinemathek Foundation; since then, the complete version is now available in DCP (Digital Cinema Package) format.
